TSN: Deterministic communications for the Industry 4,0

TSN(2018): Deterministic communications for Industry 4.0. TSN for Smart Grid.

Type of project: Development of innovative activities in cooperation. Industrial Research.

Project financed by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism (MINCOTUR) within the program of support to the AEI to contribute to the improvement of the competitiveness of the Spanish industry.

Objective: Industrial development of a packet switching equipment (switch) compatible with the TSN standard; evaluation and test of the application of TSN technology as a communication bus for Smart Grid networks. It is a very important business case, with great potential for economic growth and with an improvement in the reliability, efficiency and scalability of the key electrical networks for the future development of the sector.

TSN(2017): Deterministic communications for the Industry 4.0 (Comunicaciones deterministas para la Industria 4.0). Co-financied by MINETAD.

Objective: The main objective of the TSN is to develop a very innovative technology, that stands out against other industrial solutions (CAN, Profinet, Profibus, EtherCAT) thanks to its interoperability with the predominant Ethernet technology in today’s communications systems. This is causing in all industrial processes of manufacturing and industrial automation to adopt this communications technology, expecting that in a short space of time (less than 10 years), more than 80% of the manufacturing industry use it in communications of its control and automation processes.

TSNs are a set of IEEE 802 Ethernet standards defined for the IEEE TSN working group and define the standards that allow fully deterministic real-time communication via Ethernet. This can be achieved through the use of a global time reference and timing that is shared among all components of the network. The project outcomes will develop non-marketable prototypes of a hardware card (PCB) compatible with this standard, the firmware/software support of the equipment and the pilot validation and test tests in the laboratory of the developed equipment. Also, this project aims to develop a hardware card and associated firmware for deterministic industrial communications systems in TSN (Time Sensitive Networking).
